(4/10) Club Member Jack Keilman of Cape Coral, FL asks: What's the best and safest way to clean inside of a food waste disposer? Mark Peterson, at In - Sink - Erator, suggests the following: First, disconnect the power supply. Never work on a waste disposer with the power on. Now, reach through the opening and clean the splash guard (some types are removable) and the upper lip of the grind chamber with a scouring pad. Then, drain a half - full sink of warm water mixed with 1/4 cup of baking soda through the disposer. Mark also addressed the other comments and suggestions made by Club members. He says that grinding ice cubes and saltines is not really effective, but there's no harm in doing either. Grinding hard objects such as bones or fruit pits cleans by creating a scouring action. Draining a sink full of warm, soapy water can work, but Mark recommends using baking soda instead of soap. Finally, operating a disposer with a full load of water (such as when the sink is half full) stresses the motor and should only be done occasionally. | |
