Show Us Your Shop – Brad Carlson

Building the shop for 20 years

I live in Myrtle Beach, SC, and have been building up my shop for about 20 years. Sometimes I build there, and sometimes I just hang out and take it easy. It's a two-car garage attached to my house. Anything that used to be stored in the garage is either in the attic, or, if it has four wheels, it sits in the driveway.

Most everything’s on wheels
I outfitted my shop with A/C, some electric heat sources and a TV/DVR for enjoyment during glue-up drying times. Most everything is on wheels, so I can reset the shop to make room for a new tool, which I’m always on the look out for.

I have mainly Craftsman tools (Photo 1); they’ve served me well over the years, and I really like their durability. My Lathe was new in the 1970s and still runs like a charm.

New dust collection
I have put in full dust collection (Photo 2) with newly installed super gates, to keep my wife happy. I also run an air cleaner when woodworking. Surprisingly little dust makes it into the house. Plus, I have to go through the laundry room to get there, and most of the dust ends up there anyway.

I make toys, bird houses/feeders, furniture — pretty much anything you can think of from turned projects to a room addition on my last home. I’m a department store manager by trade and a self-taught woodworker. It helps me relax and release stress. I enjoy my shop (Photo 3) nearly everyday, and I just wanted to share it with the rest of the members.
