Does anyone have plans for a flag display case? My wife's granfather just passed away. I want to build a case for the flag the Navy draped over his coffin and presented to her grandmother. I've seen fancy cases that hold commendations and medals, but I'm just looking to build the triangular case for the the flag itself. We went for the funeral, but her grandmother is out of state. So, I do not have access to the flag for dimensions. I could draw the plans up myself if I could measure the flag, but that is not possible.

ChuckJ:

Go to the local American Vet's, VFW Hall, Recruiting station or even an Amory where National Guards hold meetings and some one could help you. Many of these organizations hold memorial services for members during their funeral.

ChuckJ,
I found  "THIS LINK"  while doing a 'Google Search' for "military ceremonial flag case".

You may have better luck by changing the search data to "military ceremonial flag case PLANS" if you are insistent on making one vs. buying one already made.

Oldman's suggestion to check with a local VFW may offer sources for getting one at 'reduced cost' through their organization too.

ADDED EDIT:
JohntheNewbie's post was made while I was writing this.... EXCELLENT PLANS!

You could also use the other site given above for measurements. Hope this helps out!

Hi Chuck!

Hey - just a heads up!  I see you do not have access to the flag, but I would strongly suggest you get the actual flag before starting your case regardless of the plans you use.  I found flags to be different sizes for some reason.  At least have someone measure it for you so you know the exact size!

The flag case that I made in the link ramj81 provided was for a friend of my wife whose father passed.  I was surprised to see that this flag was MUCH larger than the flag I have from my father.  So I would suggest you get the actual flag, have it folded, and measure it to ensure the case holds the flag securely.

I really did not have plans for this.  I did much like you are looking for different pland.  I had the case basically finished when my wifes friend threw a curve ball at me saying she had a brass plate engraved that she wanted on the case.  I really did not have a place to put it and did not want to start a new case, so I came up with raising the case on brass rods and putting the plate below!

I also designed it so the bottom comes off enabling someone to replace the glass should it get broken.  I created the wood backing for the case to be the same size as the glass so they could just take the back to a glass shop and have a piece sut to the same dimension!  Just a thought for you!

It came out pretty well - everyone loved it!

PLEASE - post a picture of yours when you finish it - would love to see it!

oh - I was honored to have this case featured in the HandyMan Magazine - Good Works section!

CHECK THIS OUT

Thanks!

Here's a few pics of the case I made. It is made of red oak with a light stain on it.

Just so you know:

I attended a Military Funeral this past wk. I ask the Funeral Home Director what size flags do they use.

His reply was that "Military Flags" are all the same size. They get their flags through a Government agency for Military Funerals.

So based on his info all Military Flags would be of a uniform size.

Hope this helps the next member wanting to build a Flag Case.

Very nice job Chuck, just one question; is the picture hanger upsidedown in the photo?

Dewey, I thought the same thing at first.. but turned on the magnifier and if you look closely, there are a row of fairly fine teeth on the bottom edge of the hanger...

VERY nice work Chuck..  something you should be very proud of...

EZ is right about the saw teeth facing down. My mother-in-law called and said her and her mother love it. They put the flag in and put it on a table right next to the front door. So you see it as soon as you enter the house.

ChuckJ,
Just one thought, you really need to know the measurements of the folded flag before proceeding with the case.  There are a couple things that should be considered, such as the material of the flag, (ie: nylon, poly, or cotton) and how tightly it is folded, because these can make a difference of a half inch or more once it is presented.  That does not make a huge difference, but will show once the flag is in the case.

Sorry it took me so long to see this question. A casket size flag is 5 1/2 x 9 feet. The folded dimentions are approximately 11 x 22 inches. The one I made has sides 17 1/2 x 3 1/4 and a bottom 23 5/16 x 3 1/4. Getting the glass cut in a triangle is sometimes not easy. LM

Chuck did you get plans someplace or did you just get measurements and just make it? Im asking because I would like to knoe the angle of the cuts. My father-in-law passed away suddenly a week after Easter this year and his Flag is just in a plastic bag until we get a case for it I want to make one if I can. Also what would you say the diffacalty level is on this project? Thanks... Len

Len, just in case you didn't get me replies to your PM: I don't have the plans for the case anymore. I based them on the plans recommended by JohnTheNewbie on May 11. I made the base wider to extend about 1-1/4" past each side and I made the base wider front to back so it extended about 3/4" past the front edges of the sides. The hardest part of the project was the dado for the glass in the base piece. Because the base is wider than the sides, the dado had start 1-1/2" in from the edge and had to stop 1-1/2" short of the other edge.
